Sustainability and environment

Sustainability is an integral part of Akvafuture’s operations, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Our technology and operating model are designed to reduce environmental impact, enhance fish welfare, and ensure responsible salmon production at sea. Through closed and escape-proof facilities, lice-free production, and efficient sludge collection, we make active choices that contribute to more sustainable aquaculture in practice.

Certification

Akvafuture is certified in accordance with the international GLOBAL G.A.P. standard. The standard focuses on ensuring safe and traceable seafood for consumers, as well as responsible production with regard to animal welfare, environmental impact, and social responsibility.

The standard also sets strict requirements for employee health, safety, and welfare through the mandatory inclusion of the GLOBAL G.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP).

Akvafuture is audited annually by accredited and independent third-party certification bodies. These audits result in a certificate that is valid for one year.

Sustainability reporting

Akvafuture is currently not legally required to prepare sustainability reporting under applicable regulations. Nevertheless, we chose to initiate sustainability reporting starting with the 2023 financial year.

The rationale behind this decision is our recognition of the value of increased transparency, as well as the need to systematize and further develop our sustainability efforts. Sustainability reporting provides us with greater insight into our operations and a stronger decision-making basis for continuous improvement.

From the 2024 financial year onward, we report in accordance with EFRAG’s voluntary VSME standard, adapted for small and medium-sized enterprises. The standard provides a structured and recognized framework for reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters.

Our available sustainability reports can be found here (in Norwegian):  Sustainability report 2023, Sustainability report 2024

Transparency act

Akvafuture is subject to the Norwegian Transparency Act and works to promote respect for fundamental human rights and decent working conditions within our own operations and throughout our supply chain.

We conduct annual due diligence assessments, which include evaluations of actual and potential adverse impacts on human rights and working conditions, as well as measures to prevent and mitigate risks where relevant.

All of our operations are located in Norway, and we primarily work with suppliers that are subject to Norwegian or equivalent regulatory frameworks. At the same time, we are aware that certain supplies may involve increased risk, which is taken into account in our assessments.

Akvafuture’s annual statement under the Transparency Act is published and available here (in Norwegian): Transparency Act Statement 2025
